"When freedom does not have a purpose, when it does not wish to know anything about the rule of law engraved in the hearts of men and women,
when it does not listen to the voice of conscience, it turns against humanity and society.
" - Pope John Paul II

The Catholic Lawyers Guild of Kansas City is proud to sponsor annually, in conjunction with the Archdiocese of Kansas City-Kansas and the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, the Red Mass. The Red Mass is a tradition in the Catholic Church that can be traced back to the Cathedral of Paris in 1245. The Mass is traditionally celebrated in the fall, at what was the beginning of the term of court, for judges, prosecutors, politicians, attorneys, law students, government officials, law professors and anyone involved in the legal profession or a position of public trust. This special time of prayer and blessing asks the Holy Spirit to guide the members of the legal profession in the pursuit of justice and to grant them wisdom to appreciate the great responsibility that comes with this noble profession.

The legal profession in Kansas City, like so many other cities in America and throughout the world, is blessed to have the opportunity to gather together once a year, and pray for God’s blessing upon our profession. We hope that you will consider joining us!

The Red Mass is followed by a reception and, in the years to come, we plan to present the St. Thomas More Award to a member of the legal profession who, like St. Thomas More, stands by his or her Catholic identity and strives for Justice.

For more information on the Red Mass, please contact Joshua McCaig at

October 29, 2015, Location will be at St. Peter's Parish in Kansas City, MO and will concelebrated by Archbishop Naumann, Abbot James, and possibly our new incoming Bishop Johnston, and will be followed by a small reception at the church.
